Why Streaming Services Keep Detecting Your VPN (and What a New IP Can and Cannot Fix)

Someone on r/VPN described an arc most geo-shifters eventually live through: "First, it stopped working with vpn, then I ordered proxy server and it worked fine. Now it blocks proxy too." HBO Max, on both the TV and the laptop. Their setup never changed. The other side did. Streaming platforms subscribe to IP intelligence feeds, those feeds re-graded the addresses this person was renting, and playback died overnight. This piece explains how that grading works, why it eventually catches nearly every shared IP, and what a different IP genuinely can and cannot do about it. No "best proxy for Netflix" ranking follows. Mechanisms first.

How streaming services detect VPNs and proxies

Streaming services detect VPNs and proxies by checking every connecting IP against commercial reputation databases that label each address by type (hosting, VPN, proxy, residential), then adding their own signals on top: usage patterns, DNS location, WebRTC, and what your account itself says about where you live.

The IP reputation layer

The database part is the core. Companies like MaxMind, IPinfo and IP2Location sell feeds that grade essentially every routable address on the internet: this block belongs to a home broadband provider, that one to a hosting company, this specific address is a known VPN exit. A streaming platform does not need to catch you doing anything. It looks up your IP, reads the label, and decides before the first frame loads.

Some of that grading is wholesale. Every address announced by a datacenter network (Amazon, Hetzner, M247, the ranges most VPN companies rent from) can be flagged as hosting in one stroke, because no household watches television from inside a server rack. Behavior gets layered on top of the labels: one IP signing into large numbers of unrelated accounts does not look like a family, and platforms score that pattern on their own, without waiting for a database update.

The leaks and the account itself

The rest of the detection never looks at your proxy at all. Smart TVs often ship with hardcoded DNS (Google's 8.8.8.8 is the usual suspect), so your video request arrives from an IP in one country while your DNS lookups resolve somewhere that contradicts it. Browsers add WebRTC, which can hand your real address to the site through STUN requests even while the proxy carries the page traffic. And underneath everything sit account signals no network trick touches: the billing country on your card, and the region of the app store your TV app was installed from.

Why the VPN that "worked fine" stops working

A VPN that streamed happily last month stops working because shared exit servers stack users onto one address until it crosses a usage threshold and gets re-graded as a VPN exit, and every platform licensing that data blocks it in the next update.

A poster on r/VPN_Question put the lifecycle in one line: "VPNs work initially, but after a while, streaming websites start displaying 'VPN detected'." That is the reputation treadmill. A fresh exit IP has no history. Traffic accumulates from strangers in every timezone, the graders eventually notice, the label flips, and the address is dead for streaming everywhere at once. The VPN company buys new ranges, those burn too, and the cycle repeats. Shared proxies ride the same treadmill, which is exactly what happened to the HBO Max poster above. The proxy was never better than the VPN. It was just earlier in its life.

The IP ladder: datacenter, rotating residential, static ISP

The three IP types fail differently: datacenter addresses carry a hosting label and get blocked first, rotating residential addresses grade clean but change mid-stream, and static ISP addresses keep one residential-graded IP for months, which makes them the usual answer for streaming, with real caveats.

Datacenter dies first because the label is inherited from the network it sits in. Rotating residential IPs come from actual household connections, so they grade clean, but the pool rotates. A film runs two hours. If your session moves to a new address partway through, the player sees a country hop or a session mismatch and re-checks you. Sticky sessions hold one IP for a stretch of minutes, which helps, and still tends to end before the credits do.

A static ISP proxy is the odd one: a server-hosted address registered inside a consumer ISP's range, so many reputation databases grade it residential, and it stays yours for months with nobody else on it to burn it. This maps directly onto the r/VPN question weighing a shared VPN, a VPN static IP, and "a static ISP IP proxy for that specific country" for Netflix. The shared option is the weak one. Between the two static options, what actually matters is which range the address sits in and who touched it before you.

Now the caveats, because they are not small. Grading is per database and per service. Netflix's picture of an address is not Disney's picture of it. Some services re-grade quickly, some run their own detection, and a block of ISP addresses can flip from residential to hosting in a single feed update. Nothing here is permanent. When a recent r/VPN thread asked which service throws proxy errors most aggressively, posters kept naming BBC iPlayer and DAZN, with Hulu and JioHotstar in the replies too. Treat that as reported experience from one thread, not a measurement. The ordering shifts by month and by region.

What a new IP cannot fix

No IP, however cleanly graded, can fix signals that live on your device or your account: billing country, app store region, hardcoded DNS, WebRTC, and the VPN checks built into TV apps themselves.

Prime Video shows this well. One r/VPN poster reported being blocked "regardless of which country I'm connected to," with the on-screen message "Your device is connected to the Internet using a VPN or proxy service." Read that pattern carefully. IP reputation is per address, so a burned exit in one country says nothing about a fresh one in another. Blocked in every country points somewhere else entirely. A DNS resolver contradicting the IP. WebRTC handing over the real address. The app detecting an active VPN profile on the device itself. Or the account: Amazon already knows your billing country and your marketplace, and needs no IP to know them. Swapping proxies cannot reach any of that. Run a leak test with the proxy active, check DNS and WebRTC, fix what leaks, and only then judge the address.

Smart TVs are the hardest case of all. You usually cannot set a proxy on the TV directly, the app store region decides which apps you even see, and some apps refuse playback the moment they detect a VPN profile on the device. Routing at the router fixes the network path and none of the account signals.

Local channels are a harder problem than countries

Watching Lafayette, Indiana local channels requires a city-level or at least state-level IP plus matching account signals, and a country-level VPN provides neither.

One r/VPN poster asked exactly this: could YouTube TV or Hulu Live show local channels from the Lafayette area? A VPN sells you countries, occasionally big-market cities, and its shared exits carry the exit-node label anyway. State and city targeting does exist on some residential proxy pools, so an Indiana address is technically reachable. Honesty requires the second half, though. YouTube TV works out your home area from payment details and account signals as well, and re-checks your location on a schedule. An Indiana IP helps the location check pass. It does not, on its own, make you an Indiana household.

What anyone can honestly sell you

Nobody, including us, can promise an IP that streams forever, because dodging region checks breaks every major streaming platform's terms of service, and the platforms answer with playback blocks the moment their data catches up.

That sentence is the whole market, stated plainly. Netflix, Prime Video, Max and the rest all reserve the right to block proxies and VPNs, and they exercise it. So keep the order of operations. Test for DNS and WebRTC leaks before blaming the IP. Check the account and app store region before buying anything. Then, if the address itself really is the problem, pick the address type whose failure mode you can live with.
